第一品 雙品 瞎眼的阿羅漢
心是所有法的先導，
心是所有造作的主導，
若人造作身口意惡業，必定受苦報，
一如牛車緊隨牛的足跡。
有一天，盲尊者迦丘帕喇到祗樹給孤獨園向佛陀問訊。當天晚上經行時，他意外踩死一些昆蟲。第二天早上，精舍的其他比丘前去找他時，發現這些昆蟲的屍體，他們認為尊者犯了戒，就向佛陀報告這件事。
佛陀首先問他們是否親眼看見尊者踩死這些昆蟲，他們回答說沒有。
佛陀就勸告他們：「正如你們沒有親眼看見他殺生，他也看不見這些昆蟲；再說，身為阿羅漢，他沒有殺生的念頭，所以並沒有犯戒。」
他們接著問佛陀，尊者的眼睛為什麼會瞎掉？佛陀就以下面的故事來說明業力的影響：
迦丘帕喇的某一前世是醫生，卻故意使某個女人的眼睛瞎掉。事情的經過是這樣的：
該女人答應迦丘帕喇，如果能夠徹底治好她的眼病，她和兒子願意做他的僕人。但後來她卻害怕真的變為僕人，就向醫生撒謊，說她的眼睛愈來愈壞，而事實上，卻已經完全痊癒了。醫生很清楚她在騙他，所以為了報復，就給她另一付藥方，終於使她的眼睛完全瞎掉。
由於這罪行，這醫生在往後很多世都是瞎子。
佛陀接著說，惡業會跟隨造業的人，就像車輪尾隨牛的足跡一樣。

EVIL BEGETS EVIL
Mind is the forerunner of (all evil) states.
Mind is chief;
Mind-made are they.
If one speaks or acts with wicked mind,
Because of that, suffering follows one,
Even as the wheel follows the hoof of the draught-ox.
SUFFERING FOLLOWS THE EVIL-DOER
The Story of the Monk Cakkhupala
While residing at the Jetavana Monastery in Savatthi, the Buddha spoke this verse, with reference to Cakkhupala, a blind mink.
On one occasion, Monk Cakkhupala came to pay homage to the Buddha at the Jetavana Monastery. One night, while pacing up and down in meditation, the monk accidently stepped on some insects. In the morning, some monks visiting the monk found the dead insects. The thought ill of the monk and reported the matter to the Buddha. The Buddha asked them whether they had seen the monk killing the insects. When they answered in the negative, the Buddha said, “Just as you had not seen him killing, so also he had not seen those living insects. Besides, as the monk had already attained arahantship, he could have no intention of killing, so he was innocent.” On being asked why Cakkhupala was blind. Although he was an arahant, the Buddha told the following story:
Cakkhupala was a physician in one of his past existences. Once he had deliberately made a woman patent blind. That woman had promised to become his slave, together with her children, if her eyes were completely cured. Fearing that she and her children would have to become slaves, she lied to the physician. She told him that her eyes were getting worse when, in fact, they were perfectly cured. The physician knew she was deceiving him, so in revenge, he gave her another ointment, which made her totally blind. As a result of this evil deed, the physician lost his eye sight many times in his later existences.
The Buddha then commented that an evil deed committed will follow the evildoer just like a wheel follows the hoof of the ox that bears the yoke.
Explanatory Translation
All that we experience begins with thought Our words and deeds spring from thought. If we speak or act with evil thoughts, unpleasant circumstances and experience inevitably result. Wherever we go, we create bad circumstance because we carry bad thoughts. We cannot shake off this suffering as long as we are tied to our evil thoughts. This is very much like the wheel of a cart following the hoofs of the ox yoked to the cart. The cart-wheel, along with the heavy load of the cart, keeps following the draught oxen. The animal is bound to this heavy load and cannot leave it.
